The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc.N)- Upgrading degree is intended to produce professionally trained nurses in health and experts in both the corporate and private sector. The programme provides theoretical knowledge and practical skills in nursing, and will also enhance critical thinking in technology and evidence based nursing. Graduates of the programme will have a high level of skill competence and expertise to provide nursing care services to clients in health needs, and be employable in, health institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations and generally provide and manage services in health institutions in Kenya and beyond.

2.4 Goal of the Programme

The goal of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)- Upgrading is to equip students with clinical skills, critical thinking, and leadership abilities to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. It prepares nurses to work in diverse healthcare settings, contribute to healthcare improvements, and pursue advanced education for specialized roles in the nursing field.  

2.5 Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme

By the end of the programme the graduate shall be able to:

1.     Utilize the theoretical and empirical knowledge from the physical, social, behavioral, biomedical and clinical sciences alongside information technology in provision of quality nursing care.

2.    Provide holistic nursing care including medical-surgical, pediatric, geriatric, and mental health to individual, family and communities using the nursing process, reflective practice, critical thinking skills and evidence based practice and relevant digital tools.

3.    Demonstrate competence in midwifery practice including safe motherhood, managing sexual and reproductive health conditions based on ethical, moral, legal and technological considerations for nursing practice.   

4.    Increase the quality of health status through health education, leadership skills and policy formulation and the use of information, communication technology to enhance health promotion strategies.

5.    Incorporate professional approach in nursing practice, which impact on the health care system in the community and societal health by leveraging digital health innovations and maintaining ethical standards of all aspects of care.

6.    Demonstrate competence in managing epidemics, endemics, pandemics and emerging and re- emerging health threats by utilizing current evidence, surveillance systems, data analytics, and other health informatics tools to deliver responsive and quality care.

7.    Conduct scientific and operational research, disseminate findings and utilize the results to provide quality nursing care and health services and contribute to the development of scientific body of knowledge of nursing.

2.6 Mode of Delivery of the Programme

Teaching and learning will be conducted through part time blended mode with carefully planned and executed lectures, tutorials and seminars, skills lab sessions, clinical placements, and projects that promote students’ active participation.

2.7 Academic Regulations of the Programme

The programme shall be housed in the departments of nursing, school of Health Sciences. The programme shall be headed by a programme leader who ideally should be a Senior Lecturers or above. The university quality assurance mechanisms shall apply.

2.7.1    Admission Requirements for the Programme

a) The minimum requirements for admission to Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) must be met, 

b)  The applicant must be a holder of a Diploma in General Nursing or Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) or any other relevant qualification approved by the NCK.

c)   Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and hold a current Practice License.

2.7.2 Regulations on Credit Accumulation and Transfer to the Programme

2.7.2.1 Credit Accumulation

Regulations on credit accumulation, including possible pathways, shall be in line with the provisions of the Universities Regulations, Universities Standards and Guidelines, and general national trends.

2.7.2.2 Credit Transfer

Credit transfers shall be accepted for purposes of student mobility and recognition of prior learning. The guidelines for credit transfer in the University include:

A student transferring to Kaimosi Friends University must at least cover 51% of the credits at Kaimosi Friends University to obtain a degree from the admitting university. Credit transfer shall be permitted to a maximum of 33% of the total units for similar programmes at the same level in line with CUE Standards and Guidelines (2014).

Students must complete all the prerequisite courses prior to transfer. 

The applicant must have obtained a minimum pass of C (50%) in every course being considered for credit transfer.
